7 Experiment Chapter 1: Food
Jen Hatmaker tells of HER 7 Experiment fast dealing with food but strongly suggests that each of us find our own way through the whole Experiment. She chose to research her food needs and limit her food for a month to only 7 foods.
One of the possible suggestions in the Bible Study published by Life Way Publishers is to examine whether you personally have a heart for a particular country or culture in the world and to eat their simple diet for a month.
As I have tried to decide what my experiment is going to look like I have been lead around to the idea that I DO have a heart for the American Culture. The obesity problem in the United States and what has brought us to the point that our next generation is looking at a shorter life span than their parents.
This brought me back around to my grandmothers cook book and text book from her high school home economics class from some where around 1931. She was taught homemaking from a very scientific point of view. Her cook book is written in her hand. It is the notes from her Home Economics class. There are "Class Talks" like how do you prepare breakfast for an invalid vs a hard working man or woman. There are "Experiments" like how to make gingerbread. There are notes about various spices, where they came from, the chemical components and what their uses are and many more things. There are notes about how to write an invitation to a dinner party and how to set that table properly.
I also have her actual text book from that class to draw even more information from.
I have decided that for the next month I am going to research each meal of the day from this time period and feed my family accordingly.
I am going to start with breakfast. Sound simple? The chapters in the text book in Unit one include:
What shall we have for breakfast, Fruit for Breakfast, Milk, Breakfast Beverages, Cereal Breakfast Foods, Quick Breads, Eggs and Bacon, and Preparation and serving of the Breakfast. That Unit begins on page one and concludes on page 70 so I have some reading and note taking to do this weekend. I am pretty sure I can do this however if I give up a few things like Facebook, TV and a few other things for the weekend.
If there were anyone who wanted to join me, feel free to let me know and I will share information as I go more directly.
